Support for the #CanadaUnited Small Business Relief Fund

On October 20 during Small Business Week, the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade, announced an investment of $12 million to support the Canada United Small Business Relief Fund. This brings the total raised to more than 14 million! Read the release here.

 

Created and launched by RBC, Canada United is a national movement to support local businesses in communities across the country. As part of the movement, RBC brought together more than 70 of Canada’s leading brands, the national Chamber of Commerce network and business associations to rally Canadians to “show local some love” by buying, dining and shopping local.

 

The actions of Canadians during the campaign helped establish the Canada United Small Business Relief Fund to help small businesses offset the cost of expenses required to reopen safely or adopt digital technologies to move more of their business online.

 

The Federal Government’s contribution of $12 million to the Canada United Small Business Relief Fund brings the total raised to more than $14 million! We are now able to extend relief grants to more small businesses and restart accepting grant applications from small businesses across all Provinces. We have also updated the eligibility criteria and streamlined the application process.

Our Restaurants Campaign

Grimsby & District Chamber of Commerce supports ‘Our Restaurants’ campaign to prevent closure of 60 per cent of restaurants over next three months

More than 60 per cent of Canada’s restaurants risk having to close their doors permanently by November, according to government data.

The Canadian Survey on Business Conditions (CSBC), produced by Statistics Canada with support from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, found that 29% of accommodation and food service businesses cannot operate at all with social distancing measures in effect. A further 31% will only able to remain operational for up to 90 days with distancing measures in effect. In other words, up to 60% of the industry could fail within three months.

These figures are even more troubling when you consider the jobs already lost. When COVID hit, 83% of businesses in the accommodation and food services industries temporarily closed and two-thirds were forced to lay off some staff, including almost a quarter that were forced to lay off all their staff.  According to Restaurants Canada, the food service industry lost 800,000 jobs.

While the economy is now slowly beginning to recover, to date the federal government has not offered help tailored to the needs of the hardest hit industries like food services, which will take a long time to recover. That’s why, with the support of local chambers of commerce, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and 15 food service businesses, representing more than 60 brands, has launched the ‘Our Restaurants’ campaign.

“We need to act now. Across Canada, our restaurants are where we meet for business or pleasure, where we got our first job and where our families spend a night out. Simply put, our restaurants are cornerstones in our communities,” said Hon. Perrin Beatty, President and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. “The ‘Our Restaurants’ campaign underscores the urgent need for Canadians – both the public and our governments – to come together to support these businesses in their time of need.”

The campaign puts a spotlight on the current situation faced by Canada’s restaurants amidst COVID-19: high costs, fewer customers, and government programs ill-equipped for the unique, long-term challenges faced by the industry.

The campaign is national, bilingual, includes paid advertising, and the launch of the website OurRestaurants.ca (NosRestaurants.ca in French).

World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10

On September 10, World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) is recognized as a day to promote understanding about suicide and to support people who have been impacted by suicide. To help raise awareness about suicide prevention, the Niagara Suicide Prevention Coalition is highlighting two initiatives:

  • Messages of Hope are being shared with Niagara. Look for messages written in chalk around your community. Consider adding your own message of hope using #WSPD2020 and #WSPDNiagara2020, and share on your social media channels.
  • Join Distress Centre Niagara at 7 p.m. on Sept. 10 for the 15th Annual Suicide Awareness Event, which is being held virtually this year. Join others for the online event to raise awareness about suicide – register at tinyurl.com/RegisterSAW2020 and follow the event page on Facebook for more details.

The Niagara Suicide Prevention Coalition was founded in 2003, and is a group of more than 25 community agencies and members at large. The Coalition exists to bring interested community organizations, groups, individuals, and volunteers together to make Niagara a suicide-safer community.

In Niagara, someone dies by suicide approximately every nine days. Although some groups are disproportionately affected by suicide, no one is immune. We all have a role to play in decreasing the risk of suicide in our community.

The COVID-19 crisis is having a disproportionate economic impact on women, putting decades of progress towards gender equality are at stake. This is not only a watershed moment for women but for our economy and society more broadly.

The Ontario Chambers of Commerce’s latest policy report, “The She-Covery Project: Confronting the Gendered Economic Impacts of COVID-19 in Ontario,” outlines practical solutions to confront both immediate and longer-term challenges faced by working women in Ontario.

Major takeaways from the report include:

  • Leadership and accountability begin with a commitment from stakeholders to set collective targets, reward diversity, include women in decision-making bodies, and apply a gender and diversity lens to their strategies, policies, and programs for recovery.
  • Child care requires a short-term strategy to weather the pandemic and longer-term, system-wide reforms to improve accessibility and affordability.
  • Workforce development initiatives should focus on defining critical skills, accelerating women’s reskilling, and ensuring their skills are utilized – with a focus on increasing their participation in skilled trade, technology, and engineering roles in fast-growing sectors.
  • Entrepreneurship should be understood as a pathway to economic growth, and an inclusive ecosystem is critical to supporting women entrepreneurs.
  • Flexible work arrangements are one way to level the playing field for women and improve organizational outcomes.

June 18 Patio Expansion Virtual Q&A Session

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Patio Expansion Virtual Q&A Session with the Town of Grimsby. It was an excellent conversation, with participation from local restaurants owners, Town Staff, and representatives from the Region of Niagara.

Town Staff walked participants through the application process and answered questions about details required, and provided tips and items to consider when planning for a new, expanded, or existing patio during COVID-19.
